The head of Women's Refuge says the new law cracking down on family violence are long overdue and a "good start."

The Family Violence Amendments Act which comes into force today, aims to keep victims, including children, safe. It also creates three new offences, including one of strangulation or suffocation, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment.

Dr Jury is the CEO of Women's Refuge and has worked in the domestic violence area for 20 years, the majority of this time from within the Women’s Refuge movement in Aotearoa.
